No one overturned his death sentence, he has a reprieve from the lethal injection, Maryland has 2 forms of death, gas and lethal injection. He will die just a matter of getting the chamber ready.

Some blogger said something about "our more evolved friends across the Atlantic have a difficult time understanding us."
And I would like to use those words to make my point.
but first I'll leave a small introduction, I'm european, non religious, 25 years old, born in one place, studied in another, worked in a different country.
Having said that, It's a fact that most people (about 85% last I read) dislikes america, and doesn't understand it, but it's not just because of your death penalty.
I think everyone here agrees that murder is a vicious crime, what ever the reasons for it. so it's really unreasonable and contradictory to allow a "lawful" death penalty even if one the one beeing murdered is a murderer.
it's also unreasonable, that a person is convicted, and the sentence is carried out 22 years later, but good for that in this case.
In europe it's true we don't have death penalty, and the life sentence is for insanity. yes, we considerer mass murder a insanity, but a state of mind. But here prison is seen not only as a punishment, but as a social reintegration tool.
In America, jail is seen only as a punishment.
I don't know if Vernon is guilty or not, I'll leave that for your judicial system to decide, but it makes no sense this case at all.
Now being a little sarcastic as I am, China also has the death penalty, and it's carried away quite efficiently, but they are so many, nobody counts, and it's a poor country, so more for the others. America is a wealth country with a huge gap in the middle, where the poor are just as poor anywhere else on the planet, but you still have doubts about killing or not another human beeing.

Of course, I agree with you regarding violence on TV.
That being said, deathpenalty is not just a question of TV. This is a question of differentiating a state, a country, from an individual. I can understand for a victim the willingness of revenge. In such a position, I also could feel the same desire. But an official country justice organization is not an individual. Emotions should get out of any decisions. My own point of view is that countries allowing deathpenalty are doing a big mix-up between justice and emotions.

To titophe One more go before your "resident psychologist" ha ha signs off. I could not agree more with you. If you pardon the pun, I'm dead against the death penalty but when you have been arguing with advocates of death, the only argument you can really win on is that of the potential execution of an innocent man. If you read my in-depth arguments in other sections of this web page about child development, abuse and behaviour, you will see the stand I take. And one other point. Can you believe the studies that negate the theory that a constant diet of violent films promotes violent behaviour in child to adult? My God ! I have to question what subjects were selected for those studies. If a child abused person learns that rape and violence done to them is a normal way to communicate and then they are awash with short term advantage seemingly gained from violence in films, that does not provide a very good education does it? I think that film-makers who rely on more and more violence to stimulate andrenalin carry a heavy responsibility for manipulating the abuse-damaged and vulnerable- to-manipulation child to adult individuals if you can follow all that. I can tell you one thing. Violence appears nowhere in my films !! I believe I have more imagination than that and violence is completely unnecessary to capture the imagination. And now I must get back to those films with no violence ! Best wishes.

Vernon being or not guilty is not the question. Killing Vernon will never prevent any further murders. In countries where deathpenalty has been cancelled, the number of murders didn't increase. In 2002, in France, Patrick Dils has been recognized as not guilty after having spent 15 years in jail for a murder. If deathpenalty was still used in France, he would have been killed before...

Yes i'd be glad to but although I put time aside for a few days on this blog because of strong feelings, I honestly don't have a lot of time for regular correspondence. Apart from my normal work I'm also working on television programmes and preparing books on original research I have done related to memory and acoustic imagery and psychodynamics. amen to those of you who think that vernon deserves a stay of execution. I heard about his case last week and I think that his stay of execution for now is well deserved and that his attorneys should do what ever is possible to get that witness in there and testify. To those of you who think that the death penalty in this case should still be done like right now well I pray for you. Hello Daydreamer It's difficult isn't it to actually move to another country and inevitably another culture and old relationships get lost in the post after a while. I had a fantasy when I left the U.K. that Spain was heaven and at first it was, but then I went through a very hard period and reality struck. I could have returned to the U.K. at that time But I decided to stay the course. Then I married the woman of my life !! and things changed very much for the better. We now own several houses in different places and spend most of our free time in a mountain mansion with several acres of land and many animals. Life for me now is delightful, hard work and vibrant. For me the risk paid off in all senses. You need to be a person who can make friends easily to make a successful transition. Many people would like to switch cultures but the practical realities and risk involved put many people off actually doing it.

It is a shame that someone can get away with MURDER!!!! The death penalty is fair. If you are convicted of murder, you should then be executied within 24 hours the same way that your victims were killed by you. Here's to the courts sticking us taxpayers with taking care of another drug thug who probably has a law degree that we paid for while other law abbiding citizens have to strugle to make it lagally. I guess we can now look forward to a week off in January now with the deaths of Mrs. Parks and Mrs. King and the LEGAL EXECUTION of Tookie. I guess "Thank GOD" for partial justice
